Adult Training

We need more leaders to be trained in Basic Outdoor Living Skills.  Council is now asking for copies of BOLS training cards before we go camping.

Council has a great program running this summer called “The Great Escape”.  It is being held August 11 – 13th at Camp Farnsworth..

Leaders receive training in BOLS (or First Aid/CPR) during the day while the girls work with the camp counselors.  The girls get the experience of summer camp with the comfort of having their troop and leaders with them.  Activities include swimming, boating, riding, ropes course, art, games, etc.  Girl to adult ratio must follow Safety Wise guidelines.

The cost is $80 per girl (50% can be paid in cookie dough) and $20 per adult plus an additional fee of $22 for BOLS or $11.50 for First Aid/CPR.  All food and activities are included in the cost.

For additional adult training classes, visit the Swift Water adult training page at http://www.swgirlscouts.org/adult_education/trainingschedule.htm

*Remember that if you will be bridging to a new level next year, you need to take your EOL II for that level before meetings begin.

Early Re-Registration

All troops that are participating in the Early Re-Registration got their packets.  This includes all girl and adult registration forms, an early re-registration Patch Request form and instructions for registering.

Some important points to remember:

  • Leaders no longer make the deposit into council’s registration account.  You need to give one check to the registrar from your troop account.  No personal checks are accepted.
  • You can still add more members to your troop in the fall.
  • To be part of the early registration, you must have at least 5 girls and 1 adult who register.  If an adult is registered with more than one troop, indicate that on the tan Patch Request form.
  • Girls who are bridging to a new troop can still participate.  Their form and fee should go to the new leader.
  • All members of an early registered troop can attend the fall “Trot into 2007” event.  Only girls who actually registered early will get the patch.
  • Return ALL girl and adult registration forms (even for girls who are not registering now), Membership Dues Summary form and tan Early Re-Registration Patch Request form to the Registrar with your check no later than May 26th.
  • You will get back the forms for the girls who did not register early at the August leader meeting so they can have a second chance.

Memorial Day

The Lions Club will be holding the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29th at 9:00 am on the corner of 102 and 121 across from Spollettes.  They are looking for some girls who are willing to read a poem.  If you have anyone interested in participating, please let Nancy know as soon as possible.  There are some Memorial Day poems on this page:  http://homepages.tesco.net/~derek.berger/holidays/memorialday.html

We’d love to see a good turn-out of Girl Scouts at the Memorial Day Ceremony this year!  We had less than 10 girls there last year.  Please have them come in uniform.

Community Service

All troops should complete a minimum of 1 service project each year.  If your troop hasn’t done one yet this year, please try to get one in before the end of the year.  Here are some ideas:

  • Make cards for a veterans hospital, children's hospital, nursing home, etc.
  • Have younger girls color a picture for “Color a Smile” http://www.colorasmile.org/
  • Practice holiday songs and head to one of the places above and sing a holiday program.
  • Collect toiletry items and give them to a crisis center or homeless shelter.
  • Collect needed baby items (wipes, diapers, powder) and give them to a homeless shelter.
  • Organize and run a gently used coat drive and donate the coats.
  • Collect toys for "Toys for Tots"
  • Clean up at the school/church/building where you meet.
  • Collect and send needed items to our Military Troops overseas.
  • Write letters to our Military Troops and send them to “Moore Mart” http://www.mooremart.org/donate.html
  • Collect needed items and food for a local animal shelter.
  • Check with Senior citizen groups in your area to see if you can "adopt a grandparent" or help them in some way.
  • Check with the local Lions Club or other organization to see if you can work with them on upcoming projects

Annual Appreciation Dinner

We need to find a troop who is willing to take on the annual Fire and Police Department Appreciation Dinner and show.  This is the perfect project for a junior troop to earn their Bronze Award.  Nancy’s troop just completed this and Nancy can give you all the steps they did to accomplish it.

If there isn’t one troop who is willing to take it on, we could do this as a town project.  It would require much less work from each troop if we did it as a collaborative effort.  Each troop would be responsible for only part of the meal and part of the entertainment.

We should know by fall if your troop would like to take this on.  If it is a Bronze project, it will require you to start working on the pre-requisites of the Bronze right away.  It takes most troops from September – April to complete the steps towards the Bronze then plan and prepare for the dinner.  It was held on April 21st this year.

Year-End Paperwork

Your Year-End Troop Finance Report is due to Nancy by June 15th.  Please remember that your beginning date and balance should match your ending date and balance from last year.  There should be no gaps in the reporting.  If you need to know your ending date and/or balance from 2005, please email Nancy.

If you need a copy of this form, you can download one here http://www.swgirlscouts.org/PDFs/web%20forms/group_finance_report.pdf

2006-2007 Service Team Positions

For next year we will need the following positions filled.

  • Chester Fair Midway Organizer
  • Public Relations Coordinator (someone who can get information to TV channels, “In The News”, on Town sign, etc. for important GS events.
  • Registrar

If you currently hold a Service Team position and are NOT returning for 2006-2007, please let Cindy or Nancy know ASAP.

Camporee 2007 Badge Changes

For the last few years, we have been giving 1st year Juniors the “Junior Aide” badge for working with the Daisy and Brownie girls.  Technically, they are not fulfilling the requirements of this badge by working with the girls just one time.  The badge requirements indicate that the girls should be working with younger girls “at least 3 times”. (which could be translated to be a minimum of 3 hours.) We decided that starting in 2007, girls will be required to work with the younger girls for 2 years at Camporee before they earn the Junior Aide badge.  This will benefit the Juniors by giving them more leadership opportunities and will give us more Juniors to lead the younger girls.

Brownie leaders, please remember that the following badges should not be done in your troop.  They are to be saved for Camporee and will be done on a rotating yearly schedule so no girl will earn the same badge twice if she attends Camporee as a Daisy and then 3 years as a Brownie.

  • Ready, Set, Go Camping
  • Earth and Sky
  • Outdoor Adventurer
  • GirlSports

Investiture

Our Investiture ceremony for 2006-2007 will be held on Thursday, November 9th at the MPR at 7:00 PM.  This is an early release day at Chester Academy (parent/teacher conferences for grades 5-8).  Please plan ahead so all troops can attend this year.

Slide Show

Tina is putting together a slide show for the closing program.  Please send her up to 10 pictures per troop of the activities you did this year.

Leader Award

Cindy is looking for at least one leader to be nominated for an Outstanding Leader Award to be given out at the COA on June 14th.  If you want to nominate someone who has gone above and beyond for the girls this year, please send Cindy an email telling her who you're nominating and why.
